Classification:

Spumella  Cienkowsky 1870;  9 of 10 spedies descriptions are currently accepted taxonomically (Guiry and Guiry 2016).

Order Chromulinales;  Family chromulinaceae or Ochromonadaceae (Kristiansen and Preisig 2001).

Synonym:  Heterochromonas  Pascher  1912.

Morphology:

Colorless biflagellate unicells with 1 or 2 contractile vacuoles.  Usually free swimming, occasionally attach to substrates, and may become amoeboid.  Trichocysts in the form of mucocysts and discobolocysts inside membrane.  Phagocytosis of bacteria, centric diatoms and small green algae.

A colorless Ochromonas.

Habitat:

Mainly freshwater species have been reported.
